28. Loneliness:
Everyone gets lonely sometimes and the
teen years can be particularly isolating and lonely for some. Try and
keep communicating with your teen so that they know they are not
alone, that you are there for them always.
They may share with you that they are
lonely at school and that they have difficulty making friends.
This can be hard to understand if prior
to this your child had no difficulty making friends and you never had
this difficulty yourself.
It is important not to dismiss your
teenager's concerns. If they feel that you are not taking their
concerns seriously they are likely to withdraw and become further
isolated. Listen to their fears. If they feel heard they are more
likely to heed your advice and accept your support.
MIND is a very useful organisation to
consult for further insights into loneliness and what you can do
about it.
